| Where Virtual Desktops Meet Real Business | December 2009 |
|
Leostream News & Events for December 2009 Here at Leostream, we just celebrated the season with our annual holiday party and Yankee Swap. One of our engineering staff won a one-can, USB-powered mini-fridge. So, you can be sure that this and any other USB device will work with desktops brokered by the Leostream Connection Broker! Along with the holidays, this month brings a number of interesting articles, reviews, implementation guides, and predictions for hosted virtual desktops in 2010.
And to all of our valued customers, partners, and friends, we extend our best wishes for a happy and peaceful holiday! The Leostream Team
Getting Started with VDI - David Strom in IT World In this IT World blog post, David Strom discusses benefits, challenges, and suggested approachs for VDI. While VDI can save on desktop support and maintenance costs, there isn't a single VDI solution to fit all circumstances. Strom discusses strategies to consider, the components of a VDI solution, and a variety of different products that compose these solutions. A vendor-independent connection management solution can go a long way toward providing the flexibility you need as you define requirements and build out proofs-of-concept. The Leostream Connection Broker is fully vendor-independent, easy to set-up and deploy, and lets you incorporate whatever systems are required by your VDI. PPD Releases Global Biostatistics Infrastructure
Earlier this month, PPD, a leading contract pharmaceutical research organization, formally announced a new global information technology infrastructure for analysis and reporting of clinical trial data. This hosted virtual desktop solution allows PPD to deploy global teams of biostatisticians and programmers to projects on a single platform. The analysis processing environments are located in the same data centers as PPD's clinical data management systems, eliminating the need to move large quantities of data between file servers. PPD is seeing significant benefit from this new virtualized platform, including: reduced bandwidth utilization, increased employee productivity and significant gains in time savings.
Network Computing's Randy George Reviews the Connection Broker
As part of a recent "rolling review" of connection brokers, Network World's Randy George reviewed Connection Broker 6.0. His conclusion?
"On the whole, we were impressed with the LCB's general ease of use and management. The management interface is simple and not crowded with configuration options. The Leostream Connection Broker is worth a look simply for its turn-key installation process. List pricing for the LCB is $75/concurrent user, with an additional $15/CCU for support and maintenance." Since 6.0, we have released 6.1 in July and 6.2 at the end of August. The 6.1 release added a considerable number of policy and management enhancements as well as Web Browser access to XenApp. With 6.2, we completed a full array of end user features, adding location-based printing to our existing USB redirection and multi-monitor support. This release also included significant support for Microsoft virtualization: a virtual appliance for Microsoft Hyper-V, integration with SCVMM, RDP 7.0, and Windows 7.
eWeek's Chris Preimsberger on The Differences Between Server and Desktop Virtualization As organizations start to look more closely at hosting end user resources in the data center, whether these are desktops, applications, or a combination of services, one thing is becoming clear: server and desktop virtualization are very different disciplines. In this eWeek presentation, Chris Preimsberger lays out key differences between server and desktop virtualization, including differences in integration, capacity, storage planning and much more. VMblog's Predictions for Virtualization and the Cloud in 2010
In this VMblog post, Mike Palin, Leostream CEO, looks back at 2009 and forward to what's ahead in 2010.
"There's a lot of excitement about the potential for hosted virtual desktop infrastructure (HVDI) in 2010 and with good reason. Limited trials and proofs of concept have been successful with end users and proven scalability. In fact, we're seeing a number of proposed enterprise deployment plans, encompassing tens-of-thousands of users, receive the "go ahead" from the c-suite due to the success of such pilots. Yet, despite this very healthy trend, this will not be the singular "year of hosted virtual desktops," at least not to the degree that some project. VDI has indeed become "real" but it is still experiencing growing pains. Foremost, complexity issues exist and this requires that market leaders, such as VMware and Citrix, focus attention on resolving deployment, management and scalability issues that hamper their solutions: a move that will greatly benefit all the players involved in the desktop space."
Moving to Hosted Virtual Desktops? Learn How to Make the Most of Your Existing IT Investments. The promise of virtualizing end user resources in the data center is tremendous. The potential benefits include:
In order to build a successful hosted infrastructure for desktops and other end user resources, you need to be able to integrate security, network management, and other critical systems into the hosted virtual desktop infrastructure. This short Leostream Whitepaper explains how a vendor-independent, heterogeneous connection management approach is key to making virtual desktops a reality for large, diverse, end-user organizations.
